Flying from Burgos province: Bilbao airport or Barajas depending on the area, what about Villafría, and why from Miranda de Ebro and Las Merindades the airport is done by car
Burgos province flies from outside its borders: Burgos airport, at Villafría, has very little commercial traffic, so the south and the capital look to Madrid-Barajas along the A-1 and the north and Miranda de Ebro look to Bilbao airport, at Loiu, along the AP-1 and the AP-68. From the Burgos capital the two options are a similar distance away: Loiu at 166 km and about 120 min, Barajas at 233 km, and the flight usually decides. From Miranda, Bilbao clearly wins, at 89 km; from Aranda, Barajas wins. No airport is reached by train from a town in the province, and for an early flight the car with a driver from home, from 212,22 € from Burgos to Loiu, avoids sleeping away the night before.

Why does Burgos province fly from two airports outside its borders?
Burgos is one of the largest provinces in Spain and sits at the crossing of two corridors: the A-1, which links it with Madrid to the south, and the AP-1, which climbs through La Bureba and Miranda de Ebro towards Vitoria and, with the AP-68, towards Bilbao. At each end there is a big airport. Barajas, north-east of Madrid, has the intercontinental flights and the widest domestic offer; Bilbao, at Loiu, has far more routes than any airport in Castilla y León and is the reference for the whole north of the province, as the province page says. The Burgos capital sits in the middle, which is why from there both are a similar, long distance away; from the comarcas, by contrast, one clearly wins.
Burgos airport is at Villafría, east of the city, beside the N-120 and near the exit towards Logroño. It is a small airport with very little regular commercial traffic, and the province page says so plainly: before booking it is worth confirming that the flight leaves from there, because from Burgos flying normally means Barajas or Bilbao. When there is a flight, it is a short transfer from the capital and from La Bureba, and the published routes cover it from Aranda, Briviesca, Lerma, Miranda and Las Merindades; Villarcayo to Villafría is 85 km. Aena publishes the destinations operating each season, and they change from one year to the next.
From the Burgos capital: Loiu or Barajas?
The engine's figures from the capital are in the answer above and are similar for both. Loiu is reached along the AP-1 to Miranda and then the AP-68 toll motorway down to the estuary, with the airport exit before entering Bilbao; Barajas along the A-1, over Somosierra and onto the M-40 or M-50, without crossing Madrid. The time difference is small; the difference in ticket price and destinations is not, and it usually decides. Barajas has the intercontinental flights and what flies from nowhere else; Bilbao has a wide European offer and connections through the continent's big hubs, and for many travellers from the north of the province it is simply the home airport.
What does not work for either is the train. The fast trains from Rosa de Lima drop you at Madrid-Chamartín, and from there to T4 you change to the Cercanías; towards Bilbao the train from Burgos is slow and ends at Abando, with a bus to the airport, and there is no combination that works for an early flight. The coach services from Burgos to Bilbao run along the motorway and end at the city's bus station, not at Loiu; from Termibus the Bizkaibus airport service leaves, one more change with luggage in hand. For a midday flight and one person it is an honest option; for a family with suitcases or a pre-dawn flight, it is not.
From Miranda de Ebro and Las Merindades: almost always Bilbao?
Almost always. Miranda de Ebro sits on the border with Álava and La Rioja, closer to Vitoria than to its own capital, and Loiu is 89 km away along the AP-68, from 127,38 € for the whole car; Barajas, by contrast, is 311 km away, across the whole province and over Somosierra. The province page's advice is just that: if you are leaving from Miranda or Las Merindades, compare flights from Bilbao before booking to Barajas, because the airport run can be much shorter. Miranda is also a rail hub, but no train from its station reaches Bilbao airport, and the bus means changing in the city.
Las Merindades, with Medina de Pomar, Villarcayo and Espinosa de los Monteros, cover the north of the province between valleys and passes, and are closer to Bizkaia and Cantabria than to Burgos. For flying, many residents prefer Bilbao, reached sooner than Barajas along mountain roads that drop down to the estuary; Barajas from Medina de Pomar is 329 km, first down to Burgos on pass roads that can be icy in winter and then the whole A-1. The published routes from Las Merindades cover Barajas and Villafría; for Loiu, the calculator gives the price with the exact address of the house. In summer, with the second homes full, Sunday departures are booked further ahead.
From Aranda and the Ribera: Barajas along the A-1?
Yes, clearly. Aranda de Duero sits on the A-1, halfway between Burgos and Madrid, and Barajas lies in a straight line south over Somosierra, 149 km away, leaving the A-1 for the M-40 on reaching Madrid without entering the city. Loiu, by contrast, means crossing the whole province northwards: 243 km. The same goes for Roa, Lerma and Salas de los Infantes: Lerma has the motorway at its door and the sums are the same as Aranda's. In the Ribera, the only reason to choose Bilbao is a flight that does not exist at Barajas or a very different ticket price, and even then it pays to add in the driving time.
The stretch that changes most in the Ribera is the Somosierra pass in winter, when there can be snow or ice and the province page advises leaving earlier and checking the state of the road; the rest of the year the A-1 from Aranda flows freely except on Sunday and long-weekend returns towards Madrid. In August, Sonorama Ribera fills Aranda for several days and there are many arrivals and departures from Madrid along the motorway, with concerts ending in the early hours; in September and October, the grape harvest brings visitors to the wineries. In both seasons it pays to book the airport transfer as soon as you have the flight, and at harvest time to fix the outward and return trips together.
When does the transfer with a driver pay off, and how do you book it?
For flights boarding before nine in the morning or landing after eleven at night, always: there is no train or coach that fits those hours from any town in the province, and the alternative is a hotel beside the terminal. And at any hour when three or four people travel with suitcases: the price is per car, not per person, and the split usually comes out below everyone's tickets plus the bus or Cercanías at the end, with no luggage hauled through two changes. For one person with a mid-afternoon flight from the capital, the coach to Bilbao with the airport Bizkaibus, or the train to Chamartín with the Cercanías, remain reasonable options.
The sums run backwards from boarding: two hours in the terminal for a European flight, three for an intercontinental one, plus the engine's time and a margin for the entry into Madrid or for the AP-68 at rush hour towards Bilbao. In winter a margin is added for Somosierra to the south and for the passes of Las Merindades to the north; early-morning frost and fog are common in Burgos. When booking, the flight number and terminal let the driver work out the pickup and track the flight on the way back, with a name sign in arrivals; the price is fixed before confirming and the invoice, if requested, carries the traveller's or the company's details. If the flight is delayed, the pickup moves with it under the conditions on the help page.
