Burgos University Hospital: how to get to an appointment from Aranda de Duero, Miranda de Ebro and Las Merindades, what the bus does and what a car with a driver that waits solves
Burgos University Hospital, in the north of the capital, is the reference hospital for the whole province, and its clinics receive patients from areas more than an hour away: from Aranda de Duero it is 86 km along the A-1 and about 67 min; from Miranda de Ebro, 82 km along the AP-1; from Medina de Pomar, in Las Merindades, 83 km over mountain roads. The coach reaches the bus station, not the hospital, and does not fit an early appointment. The transfer with a driver picks up at home, drops you at the outpatients door and waits or comes back at the end, with the price fixed before booking, from 117,95 € from Aranda. It is not medical transport: it is a car with a driver for anyone who can travel seated.

Why do so many of the province's appointments end up at Burgos University Hospital?
Because it is Sacyl's reference hospital for the whole province and concentrates the specialities, tests and surgery the district hospitals do not have. Aranda de Duero has the Santos Reyes Hospital and Miranda de Ebro the Santiago Apóstol Hospital, which handle emergencies, clinics and part of the inpatient care for their areas, but many specialities, cancer treatments and high-technology tests are referred to Burgos. Las Merindades have no hospital of their own and depend on the capital for almost everything the health centre cannot resolve. The result, as the province page says, is that the hospital receives patients from very distant areas and that for anyone coming from afar the appointment usually takes the whole day.
The hospital is in the north of the city, beside the ring road, far from the historic centre and the bus station, on a large site with parking and separate entrances for emergencies, outpatients and inpatient wards. From the centre the council's city buses reach it; from the villages, nothing direct does. Sacyl's scheduled medical transport is prescribed by the doctor when the patient cannot use ordinary transport, and the remaining patients make their own way: in their own car, driven by a relative who takes the day off, or with a driver. It is worth knowing which entrance you are heading for, because the site is large and between emergencies and outpatients there is a fair walk for an elderly person.
How do you get there from Aranda and the Ribera: the A-1 to the north of Burgos?
From Aranda de Duero you go up the toll-free A-1, past Lerma, and on reaching Burgos you skirt the city on the ring road to the hospital without entering the centre; the engine's figures are in the answer above. Roa, in the Ribera, joins the A-1 at Aranda and is 88 km from the hospital; Lerma, with the motorway at its door, 42 km; Salas de los Infantes arrives on the N-234 through the pine forests, with its own route page. In winter early-morning fog and frost are common across the province, and the stretch of motorway between Lerma and Burgos often has them; expect to travel more slowly.
The coach between Aranda and Burgos runs along the A-1 and ends at the bus station, in the centre; from there to the hospital you take a city bus or a taxi, so a nine o'clock appointment means leaving Aranda very early, if there is a coach at that hour, and doing the return with the results in hand and the same combination in reverse. The car with a driver does the trip door to door: it picks up at the address in Aranda or Roa at the time the appointment sets, drops you at the outpatients entrance and, depending on how it was booked, waits until the appointment ends or comes back at an agreed time. The companion travels in the same car, because the price is per vehicle and not per person.
From Miranda and La Bureba: the toll-free AP-1?
Miranda de Ebro sits on the border with Álava and La Rioja, closer to Vitoria than to its own capital, and its hospital, the Santiago Apóstol, resolves part of the care; what is referred to Burgos travels along the AP-1, toll-free for some years now, through Briviesca: 82 km, from 113,07 € for the whole car. Briviesca and La Bureba are halfway along and have the province's shortest run to the hospital: 44 km. The motorway reaches the Burgos ring road from the east, and the hospital is on the same side of the city, without crossing the centre.
Miranda is a rail hub and has a train to Burgos, but the train drops you at Rosa de Lima station, which at least is in the north, like the hospital; even so, regional train timetables are not designed around an early appointment, and on getting off the train there is another leg to the outpatients door. For a mid-morning check-up with little to carry, train plus taxi is an honest combination; for a fasting test at eight, for a patient who comes out of a treatment feeling dizzy or for someone who cannot stand waiting on a platform, the car from home is what works. Both bookings, out and back, are fixed together and the return adjusts if the appointment runs long, under the conditions on the help page.
From Las Merindades: mountain roads and the whole day?
Las Merindades cover the north of the province, between green valleys and gorges, with Medina de Pomar and Villarcayo as main towns and Espinosa de los Monteros already facing Cantabria. They are far from Burgos along mountain roads that cross the moorland: from Medina de Pomar to the hospital it is 83 km and about 90 min; from Villarcayo, 75 km; from Espinosa de los Monteros, further still. The bus to Burgos is scarce and fixed in its hours, and in winter the passes can have ice and fog, so an appointment in the capital takes the whole day, with the return after dark in the short months.
For an elderly person living alone in a village in Las Merindades, the problem is not only the distance but the chain: someone to take them to the stop, a bus that arrives in time, a taxi in Burgos, hours of waiting and the same in reverse. The transfer with a driver cuts the chain down to one car: it picks up at the front door at the time the appointment sets, with the winter margin the driver confirms the day before, drops at outpatients and collects at the end; the booking can be made by a son or daughter from another city in their parent's name, with the invoice to whoever is named. For anyone who goes often, the programme for people over sixty-five and the fixed service are designed for those appointments that repeat every few weeks.
What is, and what is not, a transfer with a driver to an appointment?
It is not medical transport. There is no stretcher, no medical staff and no oxygen on board, which is why it suits anyone who can travel seated and get into the car on their own or with the companion's help: a folding wheelchair goes in the boot and, if an adapted vehicle with a ramp is needed, it is requested when booking and confirmed before the booking is closed, under the conditions on the accessibility page. What it is: a clean car with an identified driver and a fixed price, which arrives on time, knows the hospital's entrances and waits or comes back. For clinics, insurers and rehabilitation services that move patients every week there is the company account, with a monthly invoice, explained on the clinics and hospitals page.
The price is fixed before booking with the address, date and time, and it is per car, companion included; waiting during the appointment is booked as part of the service and its conditions are on the help page, as is the cancellation policy if the appointment is moved. The invoice carries the details of the patient, a relative or a company, as requested, and serves for reimbursement by the insurers and mutual funds that accept it. During the San Pedro and San Pablo fiestas, in late June, the centre of Burgos fills up and streets are closed, but the hospital lies outside the old town and access via the ring road barely notices. What is not promised is a volume of cars or instant availability: what is booked is what is provided.
Frequently asked questions
How much is Aranda de Duero to Burgos University Hospital with a driver?
The published "from" fare is 117,95 € for the whole car, for about 67 min along the A-1; the calculator gives the exact price with the address, date and time, and waiting during the appointment is added when booking.
Can the driver wait while the appointment lasts?
Yes, if booked with waiting: the driver waits at the hospital and takes you back when you finish. You can also book out and back at different times and adjust the return from the app if the appointment runs long. The conditions are on the help page.
Is it medical transport or an ambulance?
No. It is a car with a driver for patients who can travel seated, with or without a companion. Scheduled medical transport is prescribed by the Sacyl doctor when needed; if you need a stretcher or oxygen, ask at your health centre.
How long is Medina de Pomar or Villarcayo to the Burgos hospital?
From Medina de Pomar, about 90 min in daytime with no incidents; from Villarcayo, a similar figure, over mountain roads. In winter the driver confirms the day before and brings the departure forward if there is ice or fog.
Can I book the transfer for my mother, who lives in a village, from another city?
Yes. You book in her name with her address, phone number and appointment time; she receives the driver's details and you the confirmation and the invoice. A companion, if there is one, travels in the same car without changing the price.

How we write, where the figures come from and how we correct an error: editorial policy.
Hospital service portfolios and medical transport criteria belong to Sacyl and change; check them at your health centre. Bus and train timetables belong to their operators. Distances and times are those of the route engine in daytime with no incidents; in winter the passes of Las Merindades and fog can lengthen them. The exact price and waiting conditions are those of the calculator and the help page on the date consulted.
