Madrid from Burgos: IFEMA, Parque Warner, concerts and matches, the Estación Sur and hospital appointments, by train from Rosa de Lima, coach, your own car along the A-1 or a car with a driver
From Burgos, the toll-free A-1 runs down through Lerma, Aranda and Somosierra and enters Madrid from the north, right where IFEMA, Barajas, Chamartín and the La Paz and Ramón y Cajal hospitals are. The train leaves Rosa de Lima for Chamartín via Valladolid, and the scheduled coach ends at an interchange in the north of the city. A car with a driver to IFEMA costs from 278,76 € per car, with about 157 min on the road, and to the Estación Sur from 289,77 €. Parque Warner, the stadiums and the hospitals each have their page, which works out the price from every town in the province. For one person the train is enough; for material, children, appointments with waiting time or night returns, the car.

Why does arriving from the north change the sums from Burgos?
Anyone coming down the A-1 does not have to cross Madrid to reach much of what they are after. IFEMA and Barajas lie to one side of the motorway when it meets the M-40; La Paz and Ramón y Cajal are in the north of the city, and so is Chamartín. That geography favours the car compared with provinces that enter from the west and have to skirt half the capital. The train, by contrast, takes a detour: since high speed arrived, fast trains leave Rosa de Lima, in the north of Burgos and far from the old town, run down through Palencia and Valladolid and cross the Guadarrama to Chamartín. It is a comfortable option for someone who lives near the station and travels alone, but it adds the trip to Rosa de Lima and the metro at the end.
Your own car on the A-1 has the advantage of no tolls along the whole route; against it, the Somosierra pass, which can have snow or ice in winter, and what awaits in Madrid. The city has low-emission zones that restrict driving according to the vehicle's label, with rules the City Council publishes and updates on its website, and they are worth checking before driving an older car in. Then come the IFEMA car parks on show days, those of the northern hospitals, in heavy demand in the morning, and the exit from the stadiums. For many families and companies in the province the real question is not train or car, but whether to drive or let someone else do it; a transfer with a driver handles getting into and out of Madrid.
How does a company from Burgos or the Ribera that exhibits at a fair get to IFEMA?
Burgos has large industrial estates and the Ribera has wineries that sell beyond the region, and both travel to IFEMA with samples, catalogues and display stands. On build-up day you enter through the exhibitor gate at the time the organisers set, with boxes that will not fit on a train or be carried through the metro. A car with a large boot, or two for the same time, collects from the warehouse or the winery and drops the material next to the hall. From Burgos it is 234 km without leaving the A-1 until the M-40, and from Aranda de Duero, halfway down the motorway, the transfer starts at 187,48 €. With a business account, the transfers for the show days are grouped on a single invoice listing each service.
A visitor going alone to see a fair and returning the same day can do it by train and metro with no trouble, as long as the last train to Burgos leaves a margin after closing. When it does not, or when the team sets off from Miranda de Ebro or Briviesca, which have already come down to the capital before reaching the A-1, the car wins. Miranda is 312 km from IFEMA and has no fast train towards Madrid that fits a fair's opening time. If a team member arrives by plane, Barajas is a step away from the venue, and the terminal pickup can be chained with the arrival at the hall. For several consecutive fair days you ask for the same time each morning and the return at closing.
How do you get to Parque Warner with children from Burgos?
Parque Warner is in San Martín de la Vega, south-east of Madrid, on the opposite side from where the A-1 arrives. From Burgos you have to skirt the capital on the M-40 or the M-50 from north to south, and by public transport the combination is long: train to Chamartín, Cercanías southwards and an interurban bus to the park, with children and bags. That is why nearly every family in the province goes by car. With a driver, the car collects you at home, whether in the city, in Lerma or in Aranda, and drops you at the entrance. Child seats are requested when booking, with each child's age and weight, and if you bring a pushchair or the group is large a people carrier is assigned. The park's page works out the price from each town.
The return is the part that weighs. At closing time the whole park leaves at once, and whoever drove in strings together the car-park queue, the crossing of Madrid northwards, the A-1 and Somosierra, with the children asleep and after a whole day on foot. From Burgos city it is a long trip to make tired and at night, and in winter the pass adds its own risk. With a driver, the pickup is set when booking and adjusted by message if the final show runs late, and nobody in the group drives. Two families sharing a large vehicle pay a single fixed per-car price. On peak-season weekends and at Christmas it pays to book early, because every car is requested for the same half hour.
How do you get back to Burgos at night after a concert or a match?
Stadium concerts and night matches end when there is no train or coach back to Burgos until the next day. Three routes remain: sleep in Madrid, drive back along the A-1 and over Somosierra in the small hours, or book the return with a driver. The first adds a hotel night and another half day; the second asks someone to drive a long way tired, sometimes with fog on the plateau or ice on the pass. For a group of friends or a supporters' club, the per-car price is shared and a booked return usually ends up at a reasonable figure per head. Central Madrid is 243 km from Burgos, about 167 min in daytime with no incidents, and in the small hours the A-1 is clearer.
What makes the night go well is the pickup point. When a big event ends the streets around the venue are closed and meeting at the door does not work: the car cannot get there and the group scatters. When booking you agree a specific junction a few streets beyond the traffic closure, ideally on the side facing the way out to the M-30 and the A-1, and walk to it. If the match runs long or the concert has long encores, the time is changed by message. The Madrid events page explains how to choose that point at each venue and works out the price from each town in the province. Anyone who prefers to go by train in the afternoon can book the return only.
What use is the Estación Sur to someone leaving Burgos province?
Coach lines coming down the A-1 from Burgos usually end at the Avenida de América interchange, in the north of Madrid, rather than at the Estación Sur; each operating company's ticket shows the terminal. The Estación Sur, at Méndez Álvaro, next to metro line 6 and the Cercanías, is the main hub for long-distance coaches to the south and east. From Burgos it therefore matters as a connection point: the student going home to another province, the worker joining an overnight line or the relative who prefers a direct coach to several trains. Getting from Avenida de América to Méndez Álvaro with luggage means crossing Madrid by metro with at least one change.
A direct transfer to the Estación Sur saves that crossing and makes sense when the connecting coach leaves early, when travelling with heavy luggage or when the traveller finds stairs and corridors hard. From Burgos it is about 163 min to the bus bay, and from Aranda de Duero, closer to Madrid, the price starts at 198,08 €. In the other direction, someone arriving at the Estación Sur from the south and carrying on to the province can meet the driver at the station with a name sign. The waiting included if the coach is late and what happens afterwards are in the terms of service, which are worth reading before booking.
How do you organise an appointment at a Madrid hospital from Burgos or Las Merindades?
Burgos University Hospital handles almost everything in the province, but some patients end up in Madrid: through a referral to a reference centre, service or unit of the National Health System, designated by the Ministry of Health for complex or uncommon conditions, for a second opinion or for a private insurer's specialist. From the A-1, La Paz and Ramón y Cajal are close to the entry point; Gregorio Marañón, by the Retiro, Doce de Octubre, in the south, and the Fundación Jiménez Díaz, in Moncloa, mean crossing the city. Each has several buildings and entrances, and it helps to know the exact block. The Madrid hospitals page works out the price from each town in the province.
From Las Merindades, Villarcayo or Espinosa de los Monteros, an appointment in Madrid starts with the drive down to Burgos on mountain roads before joining the A-1, and the whole day goes on it. It is booked as a return trip with waiting: pickup at home, drop-off at the door of the outpatient building, waiting while the appointment or test lasts and the drive home, with a companion if you wish and with a wheelchair-adapted vehicle if needed. It is not medical transport or an ambulance: it is for someone who can travel seated and needs no care. If the doctor has prescribed medical transport, the health service arranges it. For an insurer, the invoice carries whatever details are requested when booking.
Frequently asked questions
How much is Burgos to IFEMA with a driver?
The published 'from' fare is 278,76 € per car, not per person. The calculator gives the exact amount with your address, date and time, and it is fixed before you book, with no changes for traffic into Madrid.
Does the Burgos coach arrive at the Estación Sur?
A-1 lines usually end at the Avenida de América interchange, in the north of Madrid. Check the operating company's ticket: if you need to connect at Méndez Álvaro, allow for crossing the city by metro or book the direct transfer.
What happens if there is snow at Somosierra on the day?
The driver checks the road conditions published by the DGT and brings the departure forward if needed. If you have a fixed time, such as an appointment or a fair build-up, say so when booking so the pickup includes a margin.
Can you wait for my mother during her appointment at La Paz?
Yes. It is booked in her name as a return trip with waiting, with her phone number and the exact hospital building. It is a car with a driver, not medical transport: if she needs care during the journey, an ambulance is required.
Is the price per person or per car?
Per car and per journey, VAT included. A group going to a concert or a family going to Parque Warner shares a single amount; if a larger vehicle is needed, you say so when booking.

How we write, where the figures come from and how we correct an error: editorial policy.
Train and coach timetables and terminals belong to Renfe and the operating companies, and venue times to each organiser; the rules of the low-emission zones are set by Madrid City Council. All of it changes: check before travelling. Distances and times are those of the route engine in daytime with no incidents; the exact price comes from the calculator.
